Artist Statement

Carly (they/them) is a Townsville-based artist, graphic designer, and web tinkerer. They are known to explore themes of otherness with muted or no colours across various mediums such as ink, watercolour, virtual reality photography, sculpture, collage, vector illustrations, art mods for 90s video games, and augmented reality animations. They studied design and illustration at James Cook University and the University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt.

They have had 10 years of full-time graphic design work balanced with passionate volunteering for local and international initiatives and companies.

They aim always to do their best and help as many people as possible - always learning, and always trying to solve problems.

Digital Content Officer – March 2023 to Present (TCC)

  • A rotation of duties including digital content update requests, scheduling of digital marketing across the website, championing the improvement of WCAG adherence, assistance with administration of analytics and publication of open data, minor design and development of parts of the websites, providing support and guidance in the use of digital communications and digital platforms, supporting customers with event submissions and the use of the event platform.
  • Projects include: Redesign of the homepage including minor redevelopment using Adobe Creative Suite, HTML, CSS and Squiz Matrix.

Graphic Design Officer – May 2018 to March 2023 (TCC)

  • Rapid speed and high-quality creation of brand-compliant and best-practice UX and graphic designs for web and print collateral to frequently urgent deadlines. This includes billboards, social media graphics, permanent signage, publications, flyers, vinyl stickers, responsive web graphics, screens, temporary outdoor signage, brand guides and bus wraps.
  • Custodian of the living guide to graphic design sizes collateral sizes across all of Communications & Marketing, as well as related inDesign templates. Primary contact point for any queries, advice and changes by keeping current with industry best practice; investigation, assessment and remediation of associated content and assets.
  • Experience across the Adobe CC suite: InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Premiere Pro, Audition, Lightroom, and Acrobat.
  • Creating brand-compliant Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint templates for use in other areas of the organisation.
  • Designed collateral for various large-scale and award-winning events to urgent deadlines such as the North Australian Festival of Arts (NAFA) and the Northern Fringe Festival in 2019 - 2021, and the Townsville Eats Origin Edition in 2021.

Digital Media & Exhibition Design Officer – May 2013 to May 2018 (TCC)

  • Design of exhibition publications, activities, directional and informational signage, maps, forms, marketing collateral, interactive displays, and short films/animations.
  • Managed and maintained the social media accounts, Wikipedia pages, venue listings, and MailChimp email newsletter for the Galleries.
  • Squiz ‘Content Custodian’ for Galleries. The champion for content updating, HTML and inline CSS formatting, and graphic design.
  • Wrote copy and proofread writing.
  • Managed, designed and developed a contacts database for Galleries using FileMaker Pro.
  • Acquired the required logos, imagery, and content by liaising with touring institutions and artists.
  • Set up projectors and screens for exhibitions and events.
  • Printed, cropped and bound publications and other collateral.

Volunteer or Freelance Experience

Freelance Design and Illustration – December 2009 to Present (Self)

Created designs for Artgaze Magazine, Artgaze Lab Inc, Aabi’s Kebabs, Ingress Townsville, SSAY-IT Youth Group (YETI), and private clients, and illustrations for multiple private clients.

Intern – August to December 2011; Online Editor – September 2011 to January 2019 (Artgaze Lab Inc and Artgaze Magazine)

  • Managed hosting, domain, setup, and information maintenance of WordPress-based website.
  • Designed and sold advertisements for the magazine.
  • Created a Pozible campaign, including acting in and editing a film.
  • Designed and co-managed the 2017 issue of the online magazine.
  • Archived old website and magazine issues onto Archive.org.
  • Designed menus and invitations.

Head Pixel – January 2014 to January 2018; Scribe AIC – January 2017 to January 2018 (DEP)

  • Converted 100s of pixel items to a larger size (a manual process) for Furcadia.
  • Illustrated and animated new items and avatars for the game.
  • Trained new volunteers across timezones.
  • As the company is US-based with a global team, all communication was remote and and work was via Trello, Discord, and Furcadia itself.
  • Updated and maintained pages on the Joomla-based website, including writing, proofreading, and designing graphics.

January 2021

2021 North Queensland Tourism and Events Awards

Townsville Eats Origin Edition (Aassociated with TCC) was the winner of Best Major Event.

My contrubution:

  • With an incredibly tight lead time, I designed numerous print and web collateral for this event that went on to win an award. Collateral created included: maps, social media and website graphics, COVID-19 messaging, temporary outdoor signage, and posters.

January 2020

2020 Australian Event Awards

North Australian Festival of Arts 2019 (Associated with TCC) was the winner of Coates Hire Best Community Event and the finalist of Best Cultural, Arts or Music Event, Australian Event of the Year and Best New Event.

My contribution:

  • Designed print and web collateral for this event, which then went on to win an award and become the finalist in 3 categories. I also assisted with the graphic design for the Northern Fringe Festival, Strand Ephemera, and the Festival of Stories, which all came under the NAFA umbrella. Collateral created included: social media tiles, posters, stickers, temporary outdoor signage, and concept design for Pinocchi.

Certificate III in Arts Administration - CUV 30403 March 2013 As part of my Traineeship at Townsville City Council I completed this TAFE course on administration for galleries, museums, theatres and community arts centres. The units included:

  • Working effectively with diversity, creating and using spreadsheets, maintaining business records, planning and developing activities, events and programs, assisting with marketing, creating and using databases, and assisting with the presentation of public activities and events.
